About this Location

Located at the mouth of Tonto Creek and along the shoreline of central Arizona’s largest lake. This site provides spectacular views of the Sierra Ancha and Mazatzal Mountains. Orange Peel is within easy walking distance of the Tonto Creek riparian area, an area rich in both plant and wildlife diversity, especially birds. A rustic, no-frills experience.

This site is 9 miles north of Theodore Roosevelt Dam. From Mesa: Take the AZ-87(Beeline Highway) north for approximately 60 miles to the junction of AZ-87 and AZ-188. Turn right on AZ-188 and drive south for 25 miles to the site.

From the Globe area: Take AZ-188 north for 30 miles to the junction of AZ-88 and AZ-188. Continue on AZ-188 over the bridge for another 9 miles to the site.

Migratory waterfowl (including Canada geese) and raptors (including bald eagles and osprey) use the lake during the fall and winter. Small isolated islands and coves offer outstanding opportunities for camping and relaxing in the unique Sonoran Desert.

From Mesa: Take AZ-87 (Beeline Highway) north for about 60 miles to the junction of AZ-188. Turn right and follow AZ-188 for 26 miles to the lake. The entire route is paved.

From Globe area: Take AZ-188 northwest 27 miles to the lake. The entire route is paved.
