About this Location

The .5-mile entrance road winds up an elevation of 150 feet to reach the summit of the 45-acre Heritage Center site.

The Heritage Center was closed after repeated attempts to make the venue a successful attraction and site for an outdoor drama on the life of Johnny Appleseed, a pioneer figure who roamed Ohio shortly after 1800 and planted many apple trees. Appleseed’s presence is particularly well known in the Ashland and Richland county areas, where legend has him saving a white settlement in present-day Mansfield from a feared attack by Indians.

The outdoor drama mission failed, and the property, given to the heritage center group by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD), which held the land as property around Charles Mill Lake, has reverted to the MWCD.

“At this point, we have no set plans for this venue,” said Barb Bennett, director of administrative services for the MWCD. “However, we have reached out to Chambers of Commerce and Visitors Bureaus in Ashland and Richland counties regarding finding a partner agency that could lease and repurpose the facility.”
