Los Alamos--Wastewater Treatment Plant (8690 Bell Street)

Tips for Birding

The two clarifying ponds within the facility are visible from the road. These are small and may only have a few birds around the margins or none at all, but the primary attraction is the large freshwater pond which is located in a small valley between the hills. Park off the road next to the chain link fence immediately south of the sewage plant facility to see most of the pond. Here you can set up a spotting scope or use binoculars to look through the fence. This pond is seasonal and will contain water after winter rains and sometimes well into spring. Other times of the year it may be dry. You can walk the road to look for other birds in the oaks and grassy hills.

Birds of Interest

Waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, blackbirds and orioles, sparrows.

About this Location

The small Los Alamos Wastewater Treatment Plant is located north of the town of Los Alamos at 8690 Bell Street near the 101 Freeway junction. There is no public access to the plant property, but you can bird from a pullout next to the road which is just south of the sewage plant entrance gate.

Across Bell Street, there is a depression below the road that will form another pond after seasonal rains. This may also contain birds. Watch for vehicles coming off the freeway around this location.
