Tips for Birding

Bird the areas around the resaca (lagoon).

A resaca is the name given to a type of oxbow lake in South Texas. Oxbow lakes were formed when the Rio Grande River flooded and changed its course, cutting off an old curve in the river which then became a closed lake. There are many resacas all across the Lower Rio Grande River Valley.

Especially bird the "land bridge" in the southwest corner of the eastern resaca.

Birds of Interest

Ringed Kingfisher, Green Kingfisher, Altamira Oriole, Hooded Oriole, Green Jay, Black-crested Titmouse, Olive Sparrow, Clay-colored Thrush, White-tipped Dove, Plain Chachalaca, Gray Hawk, migrating and wintering warblers, Tropical and Couch's Kingbirds.

In January, 2024, a Fan-tailed Warbler was found at this location.

A Social Flycatcher was found here in November, 2021.

About this Location

The campus of UTRGV Brownsville is well maintained and the area around the resaca is quite birdy. You can find almost all of the south Texas specialties around somewhere and often there's something rare to look for too.

Be careful about parking in a campus parking lot. Especially when school is in session, you might be ticketed or towed.

It is possible to park on Jackson Avenue near 24th Street and walk over to the resaca.
