Most of the territory at Hewen's Creek Park is easily covered by binoculars. The far side of the pond may be easier with a spotting scope.
Waterfowl, and the standard trifecta of chickadee, titmouse, and downy, Northern Flickers are common, a large population of Red-winged Blackbirds during the breeding season, known American Robin roosting site on the west side of the pond (500+ during dawn takeoff). Good warbler spots during migration.
Abundant with wildlife, Hewen's Creek Park,191 acres, is located on the south side of the Ypsilanti Charter Township and provides a unique experience in nature. Features include a pond and creek, fishing, meadows, and wooded areas. There is also an extensive mountain bike and hiking trail system throughout the park.
Hewen's Creek Park has a gravel parking lot that is open from dawn until dusk. The park has several different habitats that are easily accessible.
Take a picture of the trail map at the entrance by the parking lot. It is not uncommon for first-time visitors to get turned around and disoriented at some trail intersections. Reference the trail marking posts at intersections to maintain bearings. Most trails are well maintained by the mountain biking club, but some parts of the yellow trail between markers Y5 and Y6 can be muddy in parts. No strenuous trails for people of average mobility, not easily accessible for people with mobility assistance.
