Tips for Birding

Slowly drive the road through this area watching for bird activity.  Depending on what crops are currently being grown, the state of cultivation, and how wet the weather has been, the various fields attract different species from season to season and year to year.  Any field that is fallow or has very short vegetation can attract large flocks of Smith's and Lapland Longspurs in season.  Other open country birds such as Horned Lark, Eastern Meadowlark, American Kestrel, and Gray Partridge are present and Short-eared Owls are rare but regular.  In migration, there are often large sparrow flocks in the field borders and ditches.  In spring, fields that are actively being plowed may attract Swainson's Hawks.

Birds of Interest

Smith's and Lapland Longspur; Gray Partridge and other open country species; sparrows in migration.

About this Location

Along both sides of NW 30th Street south of its junction with NW 142nd Avenue. This private organic farm, operated by the Lehman family, provides varied habitats within a landscape of intensely cultivated corn and soybean monoculture that surrounds it all directions.  Like the Moeckly property to the south, it acts as a bit of a habitat oasis.  Do not trespass, and use discretion around the residence.
