Birds of Interest

Depending on water levels, this can be the single most productive area for finding shorebirds and waterfowl in the county. Larger water-related species such as herons and pelicans are also frequently seen. Look for Short-eared Owls over the grasslands in winter.

About this Location

The former Diehl wetlands is now a county park managed by the Warren County Conservation Board. Access and parking has been improved.

In central Warren Co. 3.5 miles east from U.S. 65/69 in Indianola along Hwy. 92, take S-23, the road to Milo, one mile south to a four-way stop at Kennedy St. Continue south about 3/4 mile on the now-gravel road, 168th Ave., to the pond on the east side, just before the river. 

Shallow wetlands with a couple of deeper ponds; grasslands interspersed with some row crops. This is a public hunting area.
