Tips for Birding

The main attraction here is Laguna Blanca, a lagoon which, when filled with water, has abundant ducks, and when partially full also provides habitat for shorebirds. The lagoon often dries up in summer and fall, and fills up again after the winter rains. A scope is necessary due to the distance from the viewpoints to the lagoon.

La Cumbre Country Club is a gated community, and there is basically no public parking allowed anywhere near the lagoon. The best views of the lagoon (especially in the morning) are from Lago Drive; however, you may be asked to leave by the security guards, or worse. The residents and golfers, on the other hand, are usually curious and welcoming. Good views (especially in the afternoon) can also be had along Las Palmas Drive, but parking here is also not permitted.

Parking and access to the closed-off area is available for members of the country club.

Birds of Interest

Ducks and shorebirds which, when the water level is right, can be abundant. Twenty species of duck have been recorded here, and over a dozen species are often seen in a single day. Depending on the water level, there can be good shorebird habitat, attracting species like Pectoral Sandpiper and Lesser Yellowlegs. Other notable species that have been seen here include Common Gallinule, Solitary Sandpiper, American Bittern, Least Bittern, Dusky Flycatcher, and Summer Tanager.

About this Location

Laguna Blanca is a natural depression without an outflow. For several decades, water was piped here from a well to keep water levels up all year. However, in recent years, due to the drought, the pond is once more allowed to dry up. The name Laguna Blanca ("white lake") probably comes from the white mineral deposits that become exposed when the lake dries out.
