Tips for Birding

Much of the trail system is in wooded areas and past farm fields, but they also cross a utility easement in several places that runs north and south in the middle of the property, and opens to fields and meadows where a nice variety of birds can be seen (“Powerline” shown on map)

There is also a small wetland on the Blue Loop that is recommended to be checked out.

At the end of the boardwalk is a sitting/viewing area facing a huge, but dead, oak tree where as many as 5 species of woodpeckers have been seen foraging at the same time.

About this Location

Garber Forest is a 33-acre forested area open from dawn until dusk. The parking lot is located one half-mile behind the Garber Nature Center on OH-503 and is accessed from the Allen and Adaline Garber Nature Center which is also the location of the Preble County Park District office inside the Garber Farmhouse.  Tours of the restored farmhouse are available upon request, as well as the pavilion there.  There is ample parking and a portable restroom.

To reach the trailhead and boardwalks, follow the paved lane immediately to the right of the main entrance for ½ mile to Garber Forest.  There is ample parking and an environmentally sustainable toilet.  Copies of trail maps can be found at the kiosk in the Garber Farmhouse and the Garber Forest parking area.

Trails are well marked, are well maintained and benches are located throughout.  Trails are fairly level and easy to walk.  It is advisable to bring along a map as the four trails cross each other several times.  All stream crossings have gravel or footbridges. Hikers must stay on the trails. A wheelchair-accessible boardwalk begins on the Blue Trail at the rear parking lot and trailhead and extends some 400' into the forest, terminating at a viewing platform with ample seating.
