Lake Jocelyn

Lake Jocelyn

Carpinteria, California 93013

Tips for Birding

A quiet location with a nice mix of birds. Typically birded by walking the top of the southern bank of the lake after squeezing through the split-rail fence that separates it from the access driveway to the south. Pay attention to the lake and/or dry lakebed, as well as to the weedy hillside to the south. The grove of tall eucalyptus trees just south of the driveway that borders the lake sometimes has interesting birds.

Birds of Interest

Waterfowl and shorebirds (when there is water in the lake); sparrows, buntings, and grosbeaks (when there isn't); swallows.

About this Location

Lake Jocelyn is private property, but there is an informal understanding with the farmer who leases the property that birders are allowed to walk the raised bank on the southern edge of the sometimes-dry "lake" to bird the location. Park in the turnout from Casitas Pass Road on the east side of the lake. Do not walk into the agricultural fields bordering the lake to the west and north.

Use caution when arriving, leaving, and walking along Casitas Pass Road; the location features a blind turn and sometimes cars are driving fast when they come around it.

The walled estate across Casitas Pass Road to the east has historically not been friendly to birders trying to peek over the wall to see what's on the estate's duck pond, so that should be avoided.
