Spruce Acres Farm

Middletown, Rhode Island 02842

About this Location

The Gewirz Trail at Spruce Acres Farm is a 1.5-mile trail that offers colorful signage with information about the property’s history, local wildlife, and plant species. It is free and open from dawn until dusk each day. There is also ample parking, a covered picnic pavilion, a pollinator garden, and a community garden.

Spruce Acres is a 22.67-acre former tree farm that was purchased and conserved by ALT in 2017, thanks to the generous support of our community. Over 600 individuals, foundations, and businesses donated to help protect the property. The Town of Portsmouth, Town of Middletown, Agricultural Lands Preservation Commission, and van Beuren Charitable Foundation all provided funding as well. This land would have been developed into 20 house lots had it not been conserved. It is rich in wildlife habitat and is located within the watershed of Sisson Pond, an important source of water for the Island. It is located at 1286 East Main Road, Middletown. The parking lot entrance is directly across from Mitchell’s Lane.
