Tips for Birding

There are views of Brady Lake from some of the streets which circle the lake.

There is public parking View Map at the Brady Lake Ball Field park where Park Avenue and Lakeview Drive intersect, just northeast of the lake. From there, it is a short walk going south on Lakeview Drive to get good views of all areas of the lake. Along Lakeview Drive the lakeshore has some grass to walk on for observing the lake while staying off the road and several benches; this is the best area from which to view the entire lake. From the southeast part of the lake along Lakeview Drive a scope is needed for the best views of the far northern portions of the lake. The south end of the lake is easily viewed with binoculars.

West Shore Drive offers a few decent views from the west side of the lake, though most of the southern half of the lake. From West Shore Drive the north end of the lake is mostly obscured by houses.

At the north end of the lake Short Street and Pleasant Avenue South offer some views of the lake, but both roads are narrow dead-end roads, which could make getting larger vehicles in and out for birding-by-car challenging.

None of the roads circling the lake are particularly busy at any time during the day; the most traffic that might be encountered is on Lakeview Drive between Brady Lake Road and Leonard Street.

Birds of Interest

Waterfowl in the winter months, and during spring migration. Migrating Bonaparte's Gulls have been reported at the lake in the years before the hotspot existed.

About this Location

Brady Lake is a natural lake in Portage County. It is a kettle lake and has no natural tributaries or outlets. The lake is located in Franklin Township, approximately one mile east of the Kent city limits with the unincorporated area of Brady Lake surrounding the lake. From 1927 to 2017, the areas along the eastern and southern shores were part of the village of Brady Lake.

Brady Lake gets its name from Captain Samuel Brady who hid in the lake in 1780 while fleeing a band of local American Indians. Initially, the lake was referred to as “Brady’s Lake” before eventually being shortened to the modern Brady Lake.

Brady Lake was used during the operation of the Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal as a source of water along with nearby Pippen Lake, as the canal passed just to the south of the lake just east of present-day Kent. From 1900-1924 Brady Lake was used to harvest ice in for local ice boxes, with some ice being shipped as far as Cleveland and Youngstown.
