Tips for Birding

This hotspot is on Case Road, directly across the road (south) from the entrance to the OSU airport and livestock facility road. It is a newly acquired property managed by the City of Columbus. It is easy to locate this hotspot from Case Road as it is well marked by City of Columbus signs and has a conspicuous red farm building. There is ample parking by the red farm building, along with signs to guide you to the walking trails. The entire area is a reclaimed livestock pasture with many paths. Most either follow fence lines or are mown through prairie/grassland habitats. So far, this site has proven to be good for prairie and grassland species such as Savannah Sparrows, Vesper Sparrows, and Eastern Meadowlarks. More species will undoubtedly be discovered as more birders visit the site. A scope is not necessary at this site but may be useful for scanning fence lines in search of birds. There are also some large trees at various spots bordering the site which may be easier to scan for birds with a scope.

About this Location

The city of Columbus has purchased the former Ohio State University “sheep farm” property near the university’s Don Scott Field in northwest Columbus. Columbus Recreation and Parks Department officials said they plan to use most of the property as parkland and open space.
