About this Location

Walter Stinson Park is mostly a typical kids’ recreational park and attracts standard suburban fare such as robins, blue jays, house sparrows, cardinals, and starlings, and occasionally accipiters. However, it also has an unmowed low habitat area that gets bushes and wildflowers that attract song sparrows, goldfinches, and butterflies. It is a small park and one can walk its circumference in a few minutes, and a scope is unnecessary. If you have to focus on one spot for birding, I would go to the bench in the unmowed habitat. Most trails are paved and wheelchair accessible (as are the restrooms); to get to the bench requires traversing a fine gravel path that is level.

There is parking at both the east and west entrances, as well as on nearby streets (observe local street signage).

Walter Stinson Community Park is a popular destination in University Heights. The playground attracts young children. The large open space draws dog walkers. Coffee seekers flock to the park every weekend. And ‘The Walt’ attracts large crowds for Fall Fest, concerts, and movies.

The beautiful organic gardens at The Walt also attract all sorts of birds and butterflies.
