About this Location

The Cascade Locks Park is an industrial heritage park that tells the story of Akron from the early frontier days to canal days through the industrial rise of the city. Cascade Locks Park is an integral part of the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area and has sparked the revitalization of Akron’s downtown neighborhood.

This historic area of the Ohio and Erie Canal is a must-see for trail users and history buffs alike. Here you can find evidence of much of Akron’s canal and early industrial history, all within a short walk from downtown! Cascade Locks Park is part of the Ohio & Erie National Heritage Canalway with access to the popular towpath trail and the Ohio & Erie Canalway Byway. The park boasts the Jewel of the Canal, the c.1850s Mustill store, house, and yard.

Take a walk along the perimeter of the former Cascade Mills. A sculptural interpretation of the Schumacher Mill’s overshot wheel is the focal point of the park, and locally quarried sandstone defines the former perimeter of the mill. Interpretive signs along the paths tell the story of this dynamic canal-era site.
