Tips for Birding

Parking can be difficult but the best spots are the Theater Lot (T lot) behind Spingold theater which is open to visitors or X lot which is down the hill from T lot. Parking enforcement is less at night or during weekends and holidays. Brandeis/Roberts is a stop on the commuter rail that is easily accessible from the campus.

The swampy area adjacent to Chapel's Field and behind the library is one of the most productive areas and the nearby Chapel's Field is a nice open area for watching raptors flying overhead. There have also been Savannah Sparrows on the lawn there.

Massell Pond is one of the water features and has been home to Great Blue Herons, Solitary Sandpipers, Mallards, and potentially much more.

Chapel's Pond and the wetlands in between the parking lot at Foster Mods both feature wetland vegetation and attract water-loving and wetland birds such as ducks, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Swamp Sparrows.

Sachar woods, behind the International Business School, is the most forested area and is the most productive during spring. There is a small wetland there that has hosted Wood Ducks and would be a great spot for interesting birds to show up.

Birds of Interest

American Woodcocks can be heard displaying in the spring around the swamp area adjacent to Chapel's Field.

Several species of owls including Eastern Screech-Owl, Barred Owl, and Great Horned Owl have been seen and/or heard on campus.

Common Nighthawks can be seen migrating over during late summer/early fall. The patio in front of the library is a good vantage point.

Many diurnal raptors nest in nearby Mt. Feake Cemetary and frequent the campus including Red-tailed and Cooper's Hawks and Bald Eagles.

Baltimore Orioles are frequent around the Foster Mods parking lot behind the athletics buildings.

There is a resident Great Blue Heron in Massell pond named Matthew.
