The outflow is an especially good spot to see waterfowl, herons, and even Bald Eagles in the winter as the waters are warm and unfrozen.

The areas just north and south of the outflow along the paved bike path are good places to look for birds all year.

One can walk north on the bike path along the old canal and Cuyahoga River to the small bridge over the canal leading up the hill to the Ohio and Erie Canal Reservation’s Canalway Center. There are trails to access a wetland in this area across the bridge. Walking south along the canal can also provide birding opportunities as there are small patches of fields and woods along the way.

The closest parking spot to the outflow is a small area just off the road where East 49th Street and Canal Road meet. Note that the short steep hill from the roadway leading to that parking area can be slippery in the wintertime.

For a longer birding walk to the outflow area, either park in the Canalway Center lot to the north and walk the bike path south, or start at Bacci Park to the south and walk north along the bike path. Bacci Park is part of the Village of Cuyahoga Heights. It is a short distance north of Warner Road on Canal road. Bacci Park has some good birding opportunities along its paved trails that follow Mill Creek and some small ponds. As of 2016, there is now a connecting trail over Mill Creek to the Cleveland Metropark bike path that leads up Warner Road to the east.
