Tips for Birding

The 36-acre cemetery is packed with conifers and junipers. Lesser Goldfinch and House Finch love these. The trees and turf are flood irrigated, with some hydrants seemingly always dripping a bit – great for attracting birds in the desert southwest. This is in contrast to the Barela and Odd Fellows cemeteries located east across Compress, which are desert landscaped;  if you bird these two cemeteries, please note that effort in your list’s “Checklist Comments”.

About this Location

The main entrance to Masonic Cemetery is on South Compress Road. If you’re coming up Compress from Brown Road during daylight hours and see a closed gate, you probably haven’t gone far enough north; the main entrance has large-lettered signage on either side. The gate off Brown in the southwest corner of the cemetery is also typically open to vehicles during normal viewing hours. In addition, the Armijo Lateral levee along the west side of the cemetery can be walked at any time, though the ditch generally has no water until summer.
