Check the map highlighting the area that has been good for birding. It’s mostly gravel, dirt, and some grassy areas. The official parking area is labeled but I’ve mostly been parking closer to the circled area since it’s all open and mostly dirt and gravel, The gate on the street is always open. The area has been excellent for sparrows, and the habitat is decidedly different from the nearby Tallmadge Meadows. We’ve had Nelson’s Sparrow, Vesper, Lincolns, and lots of White-crowned, Savannah, and more. Snow Buntings and Longspurs are possible in the winter.
The whole area seems to be open to the public. Other people have parked in the first paved lot near the main entrance, and are playing soccer in the field there. I have also seen bikers use the parking area where we were birding. The main attraction for this area has been the sparrow variety, including a Nelson’s Sparrow, dozens of Savannah, a few Vesper, and more. A few American Pipits have also been present. This winter may also be good for Horned Lark, Snow Bunting, and other winter species. We also found a reliable Northern Mockingbird, which is uncommon for Summit County.
