Cuyahoga Valley NP--Redlock North

Birds of Interest

Most species of woodpeckers, including Red-headed.

About this Location

The Red Lock Trailhead, along the Towpath Trail, affords the birder and wildlife enthusiast an easy walk south following the Cuyahoga River, where Bald Eagles may put on a show flying low overhead. Red Lock is a great birding spot in Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Migrant warblers, vireos, tanagers, orioles and flycatchers are abundant in Spring and Fall. In Summer, Baltimore Orioles, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, and Indigo Buntings bring a brilliant splash of color to the riparian woods along the river. Swamp and Song Sparrows, Yellow Warblers, Common Yellowthroat, and Virginia Rail and Sora can be found in the marshes along the southern half of the trail. American Bittern has been seen but is scarce.

About Cuyahoga Valley National Park

See all hotspots at Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Though a short distance from the urban areas of Cleveland and Akron, Cuyahoga Valley National Park seems worlds away. The park is a refuge for native plants and wildlife and provides routes of discovery for visitors. The winding Cuyahoga River gives way to deep forests, rolling hills, and open farmlands. Walk or ride the Towpath Trail to follow the historic route of the Ohio & Erie Canal.

Warning: All areas of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park are prone to deer ticks from the early spring until late fall, so prepare accordingly before birding.
