Tips for Birding

Oakwoods Nature Preserve is excellent in spring and fall for warblers. The area at the base of the overlook and the outlet ditch between the two small fields on the west side of Shank Lake are frequently productive for bird watching. This preserve provides pretty standard birding in the summer and is notably quiet in the winter. In winter, activity is usually centered around the feeder at the Oakwoods Discovery Center.

About this Location

There are plans to install a wetland in the former agricultural field in this section of Oakwoods Nature Preserve. Currently it is a fallow farm field that holds water in wet weather. Waterfowl and shorebirds are attracted in migration when conditions are favorable. The safest place to park is to pull off to the side of the Oakwoods main entrance and walk along the berm of the county road to a good vantage point.
