Park in the small turnout along the shoulder of Toro Canyon Park Road at the crest of the hill a short distance west of the entrance to the park. This is the mapped hotspot location. Then bird along the hiking trail that climbs eastward across the northern slope of Toro Ridge, eventually reaching the crest of the ridge just beyond the last of the private homes on the western half of the ridge line. From there the trail follows the ridge line west through coastal sage scrub. You can bird at least as far as where the trail begins descending near the eastern end of the ridge. Return the way you came.
Oak forest passerines along the north slope of the ridge; raptors can sometimes be seen along the ridge line. Northern Pygmy Owl has been seen and heard calling from the higher elevations of the ridge’s northern slope.
A narrow and in places steep hiking trail climbs through oak forest to a more open ridge with spectacular views of the coast.
The hotspot itself consists of the trail.
