About this Location

Collegial Woods is a passive park located on the northern portion of the Ohio University-Zanesville and Zane State College campus on Newark Road. The park is 63 acres, most of which is a wooded ravine crisscrossed by more than two miles of walking trails, some of which are quite challenging and offer views of Joe’s Run and several small wetlands. There is also a 10-foot wide gravel trail along the edge of the woods which connects to the sidewalks on campus to make a nearly two-mile walking loop. Collegial Woods was developed with the assistance of two NatureWorks grants through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The two wooden pedestrian bridges, one of which is a 45-foot span across Joe’s Run, were designed and built with the assistance of graduate students in the Department of Civil Engineering at Ohio University in Athens under the leadership of Dr. Eric Steinberg.

In 2012 through a generous grant from the Cora E. Rogge Trust grant, a major renovation of the gravel perimeter trail was undertaken which included drainage swales, broad-based dips, drainage pipes, signage, trees, and new gravel with a thick overlay of screenings. The trail was christened the Rogge Trail.

Restrooms are available April through October in the Cora E. Rogge Pavilion located at the trailhead of the Rogge Trail. Public restrooms are also available in Campus Center from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. year-round.
