Tips for Birding

Gilliland Nature Sanctuary consists of both prairie and woodland habitats throughout the area. There is a small parking lot on the west side of the park with several trails going through the entire area.

Birds of Interest

Great Horned Owls can occasionally be seen or heard early in the morning or late in the evening. During migration, large numbers of Sparrows and Warblers can be seen throughout the area. Fall migration in particular is very good with large numbers of sparrows throughout the prairie habitat.

About this Location

This scenic trail winds through 80 acres of prairie grass and wooded wildlife in the Gilliland Nature Sanctuary. The trail features information stations and an observation tower overlooking woodland, wetland, and prairie habitats. Parking is available at South Shore Sportsman’s Club, 5380 Club Island Road.
