Tips for Birding

Various fruit trees throughout the garden attract birds - the pomegranates, plums, walnuts, and persimmon are especially worth checking. Check eucalyptus stands for songbirds in winter when the trees are flowering. Weedy areas between plots can be productive especially in winter, spring, and fall. Look for leaking faucets or hoses left on drip to irrigate trees, which can also attract birds. Some gardeners leave out seed, suet, or hummingbird feeders, and many plant sunflowers, which are good for sparrows and finches in fall.

The garden is surrounded by a mixture of willows, live oak, coyotebrush scrub, and wetlands in Goleta Slough. It's worth scanning through these natural habitats as well as the garden plots.

Birds of Interest

Occasional rare migratory songbirds can be found in eucalyptus or using the garden's food and water resources.

About this Location

The Greenhouse Garden Project (GHGP) is a community garden for UCSB students, faculty, and staff. Members are allocated a plot to raise food crops near campus. The garden is open to public visitors, but please "take only photos, leave only footprints." Make sure not to step in any garden beds or disturb any plants or fencing, and respect the space of people working in the garden.

For more information about getting a plot, reach out to the garden's Instagram account.
