Official WebsiteOakwoods Nature Preserve is excellent in spring and fall for warblers. The area at the base of the overlook and the outlet ditch between the two small fields on the west side of Shank Lake are frequently productive for bird watching. This preserve provides pretty standard birding in the summer and is notably quiet in the winter. In winter, activity is usually centered around the feeder at the Oakwoods Discovery Center.
Oakwoods Nature Preserve is a 227.5-acre outdoor complex that contains diverse habitats, nature trails, and two lakes—all anchored by the Richard S. “Doc” Phillips Discovery Center. Wetlands, woodlands, and prairie create a place for discovery and form a natural attraction full of seasonal beauty that supports wildlife, environmental education, and nature-based outdoor recreation.
